Splitser alternative

A Splitser alternative, compared fairly

Splitser, formerly WieBetaaltWat, is the best-known app for sharing costs in the Netherlands and Belgium. MySharedXP is a younger alternative, also from the Netherlands: unlimited expenses, four ways to split, expenses in other currencies converted at the ECB rate for free, and receipt scanning, budgets and recurring expenses with Pro.

The short answer

Splitser and MySharedXP do the same core job: everyone adds what they paid, and the app works out who pays whom with as few payments as possible. Splitser is the established choice, with native apps and paying back through iDEAL, Wero or Bancontact. MySharedXP suits groups that pay in other currencies, want receipts read automatically, or want budgets and recurring expenses next to the shared balance.

Why people compare Splitser with other apps

Usually because the group changes: a trip abroad with expenses in kroner, francs or pounds, a group of friends spread over several countries, or a household that wants to see where the money goes instead of only who owes what.

What MySharedXP offers

Free, apart from the Pro extras marked below:

  • Four ways to split: equally, by exact amounts, by percentages and by shares
  • A settlement plan with as few payments as possible, seen by every member
  • Expenses in 30 currencies, converted at the ECB rate of their day
  • Excel and CSV import per group, which also recognises a Splitwise export
  • Receipt scanning that reads merchant, total and date (Pro)
  • Budgets, recurring expenses and spending insights (Pro)
  • App in English, German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian and Polish

Example: a weekend in Copenhagen

Four friends from Utrecht keep their group in euros. Expenses paid in Danish kroner are entered as paid and converted at the ECB rate of their day; the hotel was booked at home in euros. The rate below is illustrative:

Expenses in kroner, kept in euros

Bike rentalDKK 3731 EUR = 7.46 DKK€50.00

Moving a group from Splitser

Splitser Premium includes CSV export. Export the group, create it in MySharedXP with the same people, open the group’s menu, choose Import expenses and pick the file. You check which column holds the amount, the payer and the date, and match each name to a member, before anything is saved. Settle up in Splitser first if you want to start the new group from zero.

Fair about the differences

Splitser has native apps for iPhone and Android as well as a web app, says it has 5 million accounts, and lets people pay each other back with iDEAL, Wero or Bancontact. MySharedXP runs as an installable web app on every phone and computer until its native apps arrive; you pay each other the way you normally do and record the payment.

Both apps need an account, and both show ads in the free version.

Privacy

MySharedXP is made by a sole proprietorship in Almere. Your groups are stored on AWS in the EU, encrypted in transit and at rest, visible only to their members, and never sold. Everyone can download all their data or delete their account at any time.

Questions and answers

Is MySharedXP free like Splitser?
Yes. All core features are free, with ads. Ad-free costs €2.99 per year and Pro, with receipt scanning, budgets, recurring expenses and insights, costs €1.99 per month or €11.99 per year.
Can I move my Splitser group to MySharedXP?
Yes, through a spreadsheet. Export the group from Splitser as CSV (a Premium feature there), import it into a new MySharedXP group, check the suggested columns and match each name to a member.
Can I pay back with iDEAL?
You pay each other the way you normally do, for example with your banking app or a payment request, and record the payment in MySharedXP so the balance stays right for everyone.
Does MySharedXP handle other currencies?
Yes, on every plan. Each group has its own currency, and an expense can be entered in any of 30 currencies and converted at the European Central Bank rate of its day, or at the rate from your bank statement.
Is MySharedXP a Dutch app?
Yes. It is made by a sole proprietorship in Almere, and your data is stored on AWS in the EU. The app and website are also available in Dutch.
Does everyone in the group need an account?
Yes, a free one, just as with Splitser. Accounts keep balances in sync on every device and let each person export or delete their own data.
