The best apps to split costs on a group trip in 2026

On a trip, the right app is the one the whole group will actually use. Check four things: can friends join easily, does it handle the currencies you will pay in, does it work without signal if you need that, and does it settle up in a few payments at the end.

What matters on a trip

Travel puts different demands on a splitting app than a shared flat does:

  • Joining: the easier it is for everyone to join, the more expenses get recorded
  • Currencies: paying in francs, pounds or crowns, and settling in your own currency
  • Offline: mountains, ferries and roaming limits
  • Uneven splits: not everyone joins every dinner or excursion
  • Settling up: a short list of who pays whom at the end, not dozens of transfers

How the popular apps compare for travel

Based on what each app says on its own website or App Store listing, checked in October 2026. Check the app before you leave, because features change.

Which app for which trip

A rough guide, based on the table above:

  • A weekend with people you rarely see: an app without sign-up, such as Tricount, Splid or Spliit
  • Hiking, sailing or anywhere without signal: Settle Up, Splid or Tricount, which work offline
  • A long trip through several countries: an app that converts per expense at the rate of the day
  • Friends who also share costs at home or in other groups: one account for every group, such as MySharedXP or Settle Up

Set it up before you leave

Whatever you choose, create the group and invite everyone before the trip, add the bookings already paid (flights, the apartment deposit) and agree on the group currency. The first day of a holiday is not the moment to install an app on five phones.

About MySharedXP

MySharedXP publishes this guide, so here is what it does on a trip, plainly. Everyone needs a free account, and it needs a connection to add expenses. In return, every expense can be entered in the currency you paid in and is converted at the European Central Bank rate of its day for free, splits can be equal, by amounts, by percentages or by shares, and one settlement plan with as few payments as possible is shared with the whole group. It runs from the home screen of any phone today; native apps are coming soon.

Questions and answers

What is the best app to split costs on a group trip?
The one your whole group will use. For trips without signal, pick one that works offline; for people who will not sign up, one without accounts; for multi-country trips, one that converts each expense at the rate of the day.
Which travel expense apps work offline?
Tricount, Settle Up and Splid say they work offline and sync later. Many others, including MySharedXP, need a connection to add expenses.
Do all travellers need to install the app?
Not always. Tricount, Splid and Spliit work without an account, and Settle Up members can view balances in a browser. Apps with accounts, such as MySharedXP, need everyone who adds expenses to sign up.
How do these apps handle different currencies?
Most convert expenses to the group’s currency. Check whether conversion is free: Splitwise includes it in Pro, while Tricount, Settle Up, Splid and MySharedXP include it for free.
Should one person pay for everything on a trip?
It is simpler in the moment but risky for that person. Letting each person pay and record expenses, then settling once at the end, spreads the cost fairly and needs only a few transfers.
